  1. Peter Veitch

I agonised buying a plunge saw for many years considering what I thought would have limited usage. Initially I considered Festool but internet reviews gave the Makita the edge.

This is a decision I have not regretted. It is quick to set up and is super accurate. Where it is useful is for slight angle cuts which you cannot achieve readily on a table saw, very long cuts provided you have invested in enough track and providing a scoring cut into melamine to name just a few.

What Makita are missing is a short track section as their standard 1400 mm section can be a bit cumbersome. I have overcome this by splitting a Triton set (2x 700 mm) with a colleague. Added to my two lengths of Makita, I now have the ability to put a straight (square) edge onto a plank of up to 3 500 mm.

Very accurate review Peter Veitch! I no longer have one of these but when the cordless version (36v) is available in S.A. (wake up Makita S.A.!!!) I’ll be adding this to my arsenal again.

  3. Michael Govender

When my conventional circular saw gave me problems I did some research and got my hands on the SP6000. It’s twice the price of a normal circular and worth every Rand spent if not more. My confidence levels on straight cuts has increased ten fold. The constant speed feature is amazing. My advice is to take the plunge for the plunge saw. You will not regret it. Just an update is that the cordless Makita is now available in SA but this corded unit suits my needs. I will also consider getting shorter tracks for smaller jobs. Mike

  4. jimbob

A fantastic tool with accurate, repeatable settings that just keeps on going. My only gripe is that the depth setting for some reason does not include the thickness of the track; an overbite by Makita that still confounds me, but is really not a major hindrance. As for the shorter track mentioned above; I made my own with some scraps of plywood and it works wonders for copping up long boards. If you are considering getting a track saw get a Makita. Ive had mine now for about 3 years and it has never let me down.

overbite …. ha ha, I meant oversight
