Patio Screen and Bench

Kill two birds with one stone with this attractive bench seat-cum-screen.

You will need:

Tanalised timber cut to:
(100mm x 100mm fence posts)
[2] x 1800mm (rear legs)
[2] x 450mm (front legs)
[9] 150mm x 50mm (fence rails)
[2] x 340mm (side beams)
[2] x 1800mm (front and back beams)
[1] x 440mm (central support beam)
Fence capping, 2 x 1800mm
14 x 1800mm fence palings (cut 10 down to 1250mm)
60mm galvanised nails
[4] x 200mm galvanised bolts with washers
Wood glue – waterproof
Woodoc 50 Gloss Marine Sealer
Woodoc Stain Concentrate – Knysna green
Woodoc SteelWool

TOOLS:

Circular saw, hammer, drill with 10mm bit, multi sander, chisel

Here’s how:

1. Set the circular saw blade to a depth of 50mm and cut two lines across the four legs 350mm and 450mm from bottom. Cut a series of close lines across the four legs and remove with a hammer and chisel.

2. Nail and glue the front legs to the side beams as shown.

3. Nail and glue the side beams to the front legs, then drill a 100mm hole as shown and bolt the front beam to the front legs. Repeat with the back legs and back beam.

4. Nail and glue the central support beam. Temporarily position top length of fence capping to ensure the seat is set square and level.

5. Nail and glue three fence palings to form the seat. Cut a fourth paling to fit along the back edge.

6. Nail and glue the lower length of fence capping along the back of the seat and slide the fence palings into position between the upper and lower lengths of fence capping, ensuring they re evenly spaced. Fix the top fence capping to the top of the rear legs with glue and nails.

7. Sand any rough edges or surfaces with the sander. Start with a 120-grit and finish off with a 180-grit sanding pad.

8. Mix the Woodoc Stain Concentrate into the Woodoc 50 Gloss Marine Sealer. Apply a generous coat of Woodoc 50, following the instructions on the tin. Allow the first coat to dry; rub down with Woodoc SteelWool. Apply a further two coats of Woodoc 50 and allow to dry.
