What is grit?

Grits explained by Tork Craft

When discussing sandpaper, it’s crucial to understand that “grit” refers to the density of abrasive particles per inch. Essentially, the lower the grit, the coarser the sandpaper becomes. Conversely, as the grit number increases, the sandpaper progressively becomes smoother. This distinction is essential because, as a result, your choice of sandpaper significantly impacts the quality of your work.

For instance, coarse sandpaper is ideal for initial shaping. However, it may leave behind noticeable scratches. Therefore, it’s prudent to follow up with progressively finer grits for a smoother, more refined surface. In this way, you can achieve professional results, just like your technique, which plays a pivotal role in the outcome of your project.

This make sense if you imagine how small the particles on an 1000-grit sandpaper would need to be to fit into a 1″ square (25,4mm square). Sandpaper is referred to by the size of its grit (Example 120-grit sandpaper or P120 sandpaper).

Choice:

When it comes to choosing sandpaper for a specific job, your selection of the grit size is paramount. For tasks involving heavy sanding and stripping, opt for coarse sandpaper in the range of 40- to 60-grit. Conversely, when your goal is to smooth surfaces and eliminate minor imperfections, opt for finer 80- to 120-grit sandpaper.

Furthermore, if your aim is to achieve a flawlessly finished surface, consider using super fine sandpaper, typically in the 360- to 600-grit range. However, it’s essential to note that many projects necessitate a progression through various grit levels, known as “going through the grits.”

This means commencing your project with lower-grade grits and gradually transitioning to finer pieces of sandpaper as you make progress. Each time you move to a higher grit sandpaper, you effectively remove the scratches from the previous layer, progressively refining the surface to perfection. This meticulous approach ensures that your final result is nothing short of exceptional.
