Marc –
Inaccurate, but sturdy
This drill press jig is great if you want a quick press with a full range of movement, however with the weak locking mechanism and round pole, the press tends to move side to side during use, severely impacting the accuracy. I will probably have to end up modifying this press to prevent this swinging action, as it is a real problem when I am trying to drill precise dowel holes.

Will agree with Marc in that the unit does have some lateral movement although it is still a better option than doing it free hand. The lateral movement is not too bad and I found it was actually the push down handle mechanism that makes matters worse. The push down handle on my unit was/is anything but smooth. I have used copious amounts of silicon spray to get it to slide more frequently but it randomly gets almost stuck and requires more downward force which I feel creates lateral stress and causes the unit to move sideways. For my odd DIY requirements it will suffice but perfectionists look elsewhere. Tons of info and video online to build yourself one but for me this was a path of least resistance.

This “drill press” is handy only when you don’t need to drill very deep; like pockets for hinges, I would buy it just for this as the jigs I set up for drilling hinge pockets previously are a handful. There isn’t anywhere near enough travel along the shaft to allow you to drill through thicker pieces. It’s not very stable (as others have pointed out), but the limited travel counters that. Use this with short bits, thin stock and close to the base only.
