Description
Aogami means blue steel and is a more complex steel than Shirogami or white steel. Because of forging and tempering difficulties, only several chisel makers have sufficient skill to successfully work with this material. The blades are a hand forged lamination of blue steel and wrought iron, tempered to Rockwell c65. The backs of the 5/8˝-1˝ sizes have two hollows, and the 1¼ ˝-1¾˝ sizes have three hollows. Since Aogami Hagane gives a more durable edge, chisels made with this steel are ideal for use in hard, abrasive woods. The triangular cross-section of the blade make them particularly suitable for cutting dovetails and other delicate chiseling found in cabinet and furniture making. The hands are best quality Akagashi (Japanese Red Oak). Each chisel comes well sharpened with instructions for maintaining this edge. The overall length is 9˝ and the blade length is 2¼ ˝.
