Tormek Axe Jig | SVA-170
Product Description
With the Tormek original axe jig SVA-170 you can sharpen your axes to a superior sharpness without the risk of overheating. The axe rests firmly in the jig and is sharpened with a constant edge angle.
The rotation of the stone presses the axe firmly into the jig and enhances the power from your hand, giving the edge a suitable grinding pressure onto the stone. Furthermore you will not get any snags into the stone, which can easily occur when you grind free hand towards the grinding direction.
In full control
The head of the axe is supported freely on the rubber lined stop so you can follow the shape of an individual edge, straight or curved. A forestry hatchet has a curved edge while a carpenter’s axe can have an almost straight edge.
Edge angle to suit your work
Choose the edge angle that is best suited for your type of axe. An all-round axe for sport and leisure has a larger edge angle than a carpenter’s axe. A splitting axe must have an even larger edge angle. You can choose to sharpen the carpenter’s axe asymmetrically with a larger grinding bevel on the left side (if you are right-handed). The axe will then cut more easily since the cutting force is closer to the cutting direction.
Gentle on the steel
Since the edge is continuously cooled with water there is no risk that the steel will become overheated and lose its hardness. When using a high-speed dry grinder it is easy to burn the edge and destroy the axe.
Place the axe into the jig. Set the edge angle by adjusting the Universal Support. Either at the original angle using the Marker Method or at a new angle using the AngleMaster WM-200.
Press with your palm on the axe, close to the stone. The axe will automatically be pressed up against the stop in the jig and the grinding is most efficient.
Follow the shape of the edge (straight or curved) during grinding by raising or lowering the handle. Let the jig slide sideways on the Universal Support so that the stone wears evenly.
Design
The jig comprises a clamp with a rubber lined, wedge shaped stop, which holds the axe in a fixed position towards the grindstone. The clamp works on the Universal Support, on which it slides across the stone.
The jig is designed so that the rotation of the stone presses the axe firmly into the jig. You only need to hold and guide the axe with your hands. This jig only works with the stone running towards the edge. If necessary, the honing wheel can be removed to allow
clearance for the axe handle.
