During our early series, Basics of Wood Finishing, we went into depth on the various types of wood finishes as well as the different ways to apply these. In this article, we look deeper into the Woodoc and Osmo range of products to look for the best finishes to use on outdoor surfaces.

Osmo – German Quality Finishing

Osmo UV-Protection Oil 410 is a satin-matt, natural oil-based, and microporous finish that does not crack, flake, peel, or blister. It is water and dirt-resistant, moisture regulating, and reduces wood swelling and shrinkage. The natural oils enhance the natural character and tone of the wood. The Osmo UV-Protection-Oil 410 is the ideal solution for all vertical wood surfaces in outdoor areas: doors, windows, window shutters (dimensionally stable elements), carports, timber cladding, balconies, fences, pergolas, garden sheds, and Wendy houses (dimensionally unstable elements).

As a top-coat on already color-treated wood, it prolongs the renovation intervals.

As a single product application, it blocks the greying process with a UV protection factor of 12 in comparison to untreated wood.

Osmo UV-Protection Oil EXTRA 420 is a satin-matt, natural oil-based, and microporous finish that does not crack, flake, peel, or blister. It is water and dirt-resistant, moisture regulating, and reduces wood swelling and shrinkage. The natural oils enhance the natural character and tone of the wood.

Osmo UV-Protection Oil EXTRA 420 contains highly effective fungicides & biocides to prevent the growth of algae, mildew, and fungal attack

Differences between Osmo 410 and 420

While both products provide a clear, satin finish with very low V.O.C content and are made from a unique combination of natural oils and waxes, the main difference between the Osmo UV Protection Oil (410) and Osmo UV Protection Oil Extra (420) is that the 420 contains fungicides and biocides to protect against mold, algae, and fungal growth. For this reason, the 410, which doesn’t contain fungicides and biocides, can be used on interior and exterior wood surfaces whereas the 420 are designated for exterior use only.

Woodoc Exterior Sealers – Affordable Food for Wood

Woodoc Deck Dressing

Woodoc 30 is a low-gloss sealer for general outdoor applications. Offers excellent UV protection and water repellence. Has a wax fraction that feeds the wood. When the inevitable time comes for renovation Woodoc 30 makes it easy. The weathered wood surface biodegrades. All it needs is a thorough clean down with Woodoc SteelWool and mineral turpentine before re-applying Woodoc 30. No more scraping and heavy sanding to remove hard chipped and flaking surfaces

Woodoc 35 is the same base sealer as Woodoc 30 Clear but with transparent iron oxide additives that improve UV protection. Has a wax fraction that feeds the wood.

Woodoc 50 is a clear finish with a high build-up of sealer. Ideal for boats, marine applications, and also general outdoor wood where a finish with excellent UV protection and water resistance is required. This product is not to be used on decks.

For absolute exterior protection and water resistance, the Woodoc Water-Borne Marine product is one of the best solutions for the money. Woodoc Water-Borne Marine is a water-borne exterior sealer for application to exterior wooden surfaces like garage doors, window frames, or patio furniture.
