Basics of Wood Finishing – Exterior Wood Finishes
During our early series, Basics of Wood Finishing, we went into depth on the various types of wood finishes as well as the different ways to apply these. In this article, we look deeper into the Woodoc and Osmo range of products to look for the best finishes to use on outdoor surfaces.
Osmo – German Quality Finishing
Osmo UV-Protection Oil 410 is a satin-matt, natural oil-based, and microporous finish that does not crack, flake, peel, or blister. It is water and dirt-resistant, moisture regulating, and reduces wood swelling and shrinkage. The natural oils enhance the natural character and tone of the wood. The Osmo UV-Protection-Oil 410 is the ideal solution for all vertical wood surfaces in outdoor areas: doors, windows, window shutters (dimensionally stable elements), carports, timber cladding, balconies, fences, pergolas, garden sheds, and Wendy houses (dimensionally unstable elements).
As a top-coat on already color-treated wood, it prolongs the renovation intervals.
As a single product application, it blocks the greying process with a UV protection factor of 12 in comparison to untreated wood.
Osmo UV-Protection Oil EXTRA 420 is a satin-matt, natural oil-based, and microporous finish that does not crack, flake, peel, or blister. It is water and dirt-resistant, moisture regulating, and reduces wood swelling and shrinkage. The natural oils enhance the natural character and tone of the wood.
Osmo UV-Protection Oil EXTRA 420 contains highly effective fungicides & biocides to prevent the growth of algae, mildew, and fungal attack
Differences between Osmo 410 and 420
While both products provide a clear, satin finish with very low V.O.C content and are made from a unique combination of natural oils and waxes, the main difference between the Osmo UV Protection Oil (410) and Osmo UV Protection Oil Extra (420) is that the 420 contains fungicides and biocides to protect against mold, algae, and fungal growth. For this reason, the 410, which doesn’t contain fungicides and biocides, can be used on interior and exterior wood surfaces whereas the 420 are designated for exterior use only.
