10 Easy steps how to use this acrylic inlay template set:

1. Place the template over your material (usually wood or wood epoxy resin).
2. Securely attach the router template to your material using two double sided tape or hot glue.
3. Install your appropriately sized straight cutting router bit into your router making sure that the router bit has a blade long enough for the height of your material and for the inlay to be sufficiently thick for what you intend to accomplish.
4. Line up the bearing/bushing of your router bit with the template making sure that the bearing is centred on the edge of the template.
5. Turn on your router and glide the template along the bearing of your router bit.
6. Repeat steps 2-5 on the positive male part to carve out a matching bowtie inlay, making sure to carefully follow the instructions that came with your inlay kit, using the offset bearing for the female part and without for the positive male part.
7. Using a chisel make the corners straight so that the inlay will fit perfectly into the hole.
8. Apply glue to all the interior pocket surfaces and insert the inlay, a clamp may be used to fully seat the inlay and that it dries & hardens correctly.
9. Carefully remove the template from your material, using a scraper.
10. Remove the double sided tape or hot glue from the template by hand or using a adhesive remover like GOO GONE for any stubborn or sticky residue and sand off any leftover residue off of your project.

What router bits should I use with this acrylic inlay template set?

Resin Inlays:

To create a decorative epoxy resin inlay in your furniture or serving board, use any standard flush trim or inlay router bit, simply hollow out a pocket to the desired depth with your handheld router using the template as a guide, then making sure there are no cracks or holes that can leak (if so tape them up or seal them) then backfill with resin, sand or plane flush and finish as usual.

Wood Inlays with a Male Female:

Our inlay templates are compatible with most router inlay bit kits we use the Whiteside Machine 9500 1/8″ solid brass inlay kit.

We like using this inlay kit because it  allows you to use the same bit, with an offset bearing, to hollow out the pocket, the female part usually in the surface of the furniture or board, which you want to inlay with the wood insert, then simply remove the offset bearing and start to shape the insert which is the male part out of a different piece of wood, we like to use light and dark or vice versa for a striking look, then mate them together for a perfect or near perfect fit.
